Guys? Gals? I love hair. I used to want to be a hair stylist. So you can bet I love hair appointments. You know, except for the part where I have to pay for them. But, there’s even a happy ending in that department too, this go around, since I bought a $100 Ulta gift card for $80, got cash back on that purchase, and got paid to make that purchase. So I saved over $20 right off the bat. It’s not often I get to look back on the hair appointment check-out process with such fondness… 🙂
This past Tuesday, I went with more of a “melted ombré”. I love being dark, but there’s something that feels super fresh & fun about lightening up my hair (at least the bottom), especially with the summer months coming up before we know it. Not to mention my choice was validated by Harper’s Bazaar & more importantly none other than one of my top ten girl crushes, Olivia Wilde. She copied me.
I had gone the ombré route once before, but right before my wedding in September went to dark brown. I did so hoping to avoid feelings of regret when my future kids would see the wedding photos and wonder why mom had to be trendy for a event that only came once. (They’ll have enough questions when some or all of them may or may not turn out blonde. #bottlebrunette) Mission accomplished. My two chins were however, another story. 😉
Since going back to dark I have actually stayed away from lightening of any kind. In fact, it seemed like I kept going darker and darker with every appointment. (Which is fine, since winter is proving to be the darkest of seasons for not only my hair, but more noticeably, my attitude. Seriously, is it almost time for day drinking on the patio listening to country music, or what?!) But this time I actually went into it pretty fearlessly. It took me 21 years to color my hair at all, despite always wanting to be a brunette, mostly because I was afraid of destroying it. I had always heard stories about how dyes dried out & damaged hair, and I was worried that essentially painting my head would kill my ends & I would have to cut them. So to lighten my ends that were probably already pretty fried thanks to Mr. Flat Iron would have absolutely been a no-go.
However, I discovered a godsend. A godsend by the name of Fixx Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner. Now, first up, I have a lot of hair. A lot. Ask my stylist, Shaun, who is probably undergoing carpal tunnel surgery as I type this. So, I’m going to be honest with y’all. If you have a thick head of hair that takes work to lather, and you don’t want to join stylist-Shaun in the operating room, maybe this isn’t the product for you. Don’t get me wrong. It’s amazing. I’ve noticed a huge difference in my hair, and it didn’t feel dry or brittle all winter. In fact it was softer than ever and held styles 2x as long as it normally would. But it took more than the normal amount of shampoo and some serious work to lather up all of my horse mane. Like, I skipped the gym that day. Ha. Just kidding. I skip the gym most days.
But, in all seriousness, if you have more moderate to thinner hair, I wouldn’t be afraid to give this baby a shot. (Coupon code at the bottom!)* Even if you have thick hair & are up for the challenge, I say go for it. You just may go through it a little faster, & have fingers that can crack nuts afterward.
I know there is a thick hair version of this as a shampoo & conditioner – I believe “in one”, but I haven’t actually tried this one yet, so I can’t say much about it. I will though, next time around (these have lasted over a month so far, still working on them) since I’m currently obsessed with their products, and I’ll let you know how it goes. The conditioner itself, I needed an extra squirt or two, but it was more or less the same amount of work/product as any other conditioner I’ve used, which is not a lot, & certainly a fair trade for hair that is super soft & ends that aren’t splitting open like banana peels! 🙂
Just to clarify, that’s me over here on the right, and Olivia Wilde up top. People get us confused. 😉
